«And we now offer you a bit of rum and a piece of bread, do you accept? How about a slice of tender meat or pork? Look, I give you! Nice and clean, the bread is from baker and the ham is also good. Would you like a piece of pork? I give you! And I’ll give to you in willingly...»

ETELVINA AZEVEDO (81) Pitões das Júnias

Etelvina Azevedo (81), Pitões das Júnias. It took “death” to raise her children (seven in all, five of whom survived), and now, that the final end is approaching, there is no desire for a second life. The crisis — or whatever we want to call it, because crisis has always been present — is calling faith into question. For Capitalism (as Sponville and Rimbaud say — and there is such a tragic poetry in the villages of the interior!) morality is a weakness of the brain. Here, there is little money to invest in sympathetic initiatives. For the elders, the threat of wretchedness is doubled: in many cases, there is no money to buy medication. Here is the sad result of the strange relationship we have with ourselves, in our concerns with life, with beauty and with the time to come. The exuberance (or “fatalism of happiness” — Rimbaud) of some, is the maiming of many others. It is urgent to stop and think about this.

From Amarante blows the wind.

A girl, who speaks to all

Doesn´t wish to get married.»

Blossoms the rose whenever it wishes

It´s like the single man

While he hasn´t got a wife.»
